RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
